The Sound of Waiting
should be on every stage in every city and town in Australia. - Real Time / it reminds us to care -Time Out / exquisite and often brutal - NSW Premiers Literature Awards
A night. A storm. A raging ocean.
Hamed Mokri stands on a tiny wooden boat on high and stormy seas, cradling his small daughter as he journeys to find them a place of Hope and Possibility.
Meanwhile; an Angel of Death hovers nearby; conjuring up all its powers to send them both to the very bottom of this unknown sea - silent, and black, and bottomless.
An allegory for a world which has closed its door on humanity, The Sound of Waiting explores themes of resilience, humanity, hope and displacement – posing the central question: As a global community, where do we go to from here?
NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Judge’s Comments [shortlisted Nick Enright Prize, 2018]
This is an exquisite and often brutal folk tale, told with wonderful language that is at once luscious, savage, corrosive, pulsating with action and yet also graced with high lyrical poise and astonishing beauty. It is immediate and timeless stagewriting, rendering a familiar landscape bright and fresh. The play is alarmingly present and spiked through with lightness and moments of pure Aussie humour.
The Sound of Waiting is an utterly compelling work that takes your breath away almost unbearably.
Real Time
The Sound of Waiting should be on every stage in every city and town in Australia.
Time Out
The Sound of Waiting… suggests that our capacity for compassion might be greater than even we know. It reminds us to care

…flowing prose studded with starkly memorable images. It’s a work you could listen to with your eyes closed
Sydney Arts Guide
One superbly created story provoking compassion for all

…more significant is the play’s implication that compassion has become a challenge of our times, and although pervasive and banal, our cruelty is deplorable and deeply shameful.
